Abstract

Biggest challenge for modern computer algorithms are real-time animations in 3D-games and movies. The complexity of such animations rises extremely if realistic light reflection effects are considered. Using most efficient methods for ray tracing is then required for optimal usage of the given hardware.

Equivalent tasks occur within heat transfer: Ray tracing between finite elements exchanging heat via radiation is part of the view factor calculation that is typically very time consuming. In solar heated simulations sun rays must be checked for shading on their way into the cabin. Further applications of such algorithms are thermal contact search and result mapping routines. This presentation demonstrates the use of latest space partitioning methods in THESEUS-FE for some applications in automotive industry, which finally lead to a massive reduction in analysis times.
